Granulated blast furnace slag

Granulated blast furnace slag

Granulated blast furnace slag is obtained from liquid blast furnace slag during the blast furnace process in pig iron production.

Blast furnace slag is a lime-alumina-silicate melt primarily containing CaO, SiO2 and Al2O3. In its chemical composition, blast furnace slag is similar to Portland cement. Granulated blast furnace slag is a sand-like construction material that is formed when the slag is rapidly cooled with a water jet. It has a particle size of less than 5 mm.

Pulverizing granulated blast furnace slag into ground granulated blast furnace slag creates a latent hydraulic construction material, which – when excited with sulfate or CaO carriers – displays a strength profile similar to that of cement.

Granulated blast furnace slag – versatile in use.

Straßenbau

Road construction

In road construction, granulated blast furnace slag demonstrates good workability, high load-bearing capacity and stability. It is volumetrically stable and frost-proof. The self-hardening ability of granulated blast furnace slag increases the load-bearing capacity.

Beton

Concrete

Ground granulated blast furnace slag has a positive effect on the properties of fresh and hardened concrete. Concretes with ground granulated blast furnace slag consume fewer liquefying concrete admixtures and develop less hydration heat.

Zement

Cement

Granulated blast furnace slag is ground into the cement as a latent hydraulic material. The hydration products of Portland slag cements and blast furnace cements are similar to those of Portland cement, but have a finer pore structure.
